In SEO, internal link building plays a pivotal role in your successful ranking. When looking at your website optimisation bear in mind that the volume of links for every web page will directly influence how the PageRank will be allocated across the website. In the past, it was possible to develop a website so that the main focus for PageRank was on those high priority pages. This approach was called page sculpting and utilises the nofollow functionality on SEO link building on low priority pages. This meant that PageRank was no longer diluted through being shared throughout all internal links and was only present on pages of high importance.
These days, this method is ineffective and there are no new approaches that help you to limit the dissemination of PageRank across all internal links whether nofollow has been activated or not.
However, a link consolidation procedure can be carried out to ensure that only those top priority pages are allowed through to PageRank. This process ensure that only essential links are displayed on a webpage and all unnecessary links that could water the PageRank down are contained in a different section of the site.
You can see this being used on site where there are links from the homepage to pages containing privacy statements, terms & conditions and delivery information. A high PageRank here will not be an advantage, however if distributed to category pages that link into product it can be highly beneficial.
